A couple of shots here I took of the Gordon River Dam in Tasmania. This is at the end of a long road deep in the Tasmanian wilderness. It was quite bizarre and even a little eerie to see this monstrous piece of infrastructure in such a wild and relatively untouched environment. I feel like just about every Darth Vader illustration possible has been executed. Well at least I did before I found this fresh approach by Kenneth Rocafort using pencil ink and whiteout. The illustration was for the 30th anniversary of the Empire Strikes Back. Typically Vader is depicted through very polished and sometimes over-produced means, it's nice to see a more raw depiction. I cam across this series by Kevin Cyr a couple of years ago but then came across it again after looking through an old magazine (not that old) recently. I'd forgotten how much I love these paintings. There is something very honest about them. The detail provides a story, a history. It gives them a unique personality. When I first saw this photo I was convinced it was a piece of digital art. As a piece of digital art I would have loved it, the hues, foreground/background contrast, subtle details in the power lines and silhouettes of trees poking through the fog, as a photo I love it more. While I was recently in Paris I spotted a painting by French artist Francoise Nielly. I was walking across the road from a gallery that was closed with the inside lights off, yet the expressive bold colour and texture was enough to catch my attention and fascinate me. This piece by Yonaz Kristy struck me as something from a dream or a fairy tale. It's a little sombre but also feels quite warm and comforting. I really like his use of watercolour as a texture and the heavy line work. I found this piece by Pomesone on Behance. I really like it because it reminds me a lot of work by Nawer, which I love, actually utilises a 3rd dimension as well as artificial 3D graphics on a 2D surface. On his profile Pomesone explains "I often try to open the frame of the object to go into space".

Thomas Kuriatko has posted a series of epic illustrations on his behance profile which I would file in the "I wish I had those sorts of skills" category. The piece above was my personal favourite. I find the urban landscape quite fascinating and great to photograph. It's sometimes difficult to reproduce via photography and I find I can be quite fussy to find the ideal shot. Something I'm missing while I'm living in Germany is my tripod, which would allow me to take shots at night (I haven't given up on the idea though...). I think the city has much more depth at night. Here's a few more shots from my Hamburg exploration. one of things I'm enjoying most over here is just exploring. The urban landscape has so much depth. It's full of life in the darkest places. The city feels a lot more accepting of street art.

Nikolai Nowolodski has made a creepy-looking skull from lots of words. I think that's really cool. The execution is nice and creepy and he's made good use of some texture.

BAM: I've just realised that there is actually a narrative running through the words/entire piece. This adds even more depth to the piece. Top job Nikolai!

I found this image by Marco Misheff to be quite haunting and a little surreal – not sure why, although the texture and lighting help to create a unique atmosphere. A couple of beautiful pics here by Kathleen Hirai. These are digital photos of cardboard cutouts, but look like something from a fairy tale, dream  or memory. The colour range and soft tones giving the piece its dreamy feel. Alexander Mikhaylov has put together a series of impressive concept drawings on behance. This one in particular caught my attention as a possible salute to Star Wars and due to it's overall dark robotic goodness. Felix Blommestijn has setup a blog where he's adding a new uniquely illustrated playing card every week. The results so far are really dark and really impressive. A few super-creep and mysterious shots by Hanka Sedlacek. Regular visitors of this blog will know that I love photography featuring heavy fog (possibly ever since watching the movie "The Mist"). I found these awesome pics by Alexander Rentsch on behance today. He's perfectly captured the cold sterile atmosphere of this environment. The lifelessness puts it into the context of some dystopian government institution or some such – it could even be a bunker to take refuge in during a zombie holocaust. I've seen some of Tata Vislevskaya's work before on behance, some amazing urban captures (which I thought I'd posted but haven't – will have to do something about that). Today I spotted these shots which are part of a larger series titled Kleine Scheidegg. Dmitry Popov has posted an awesome series of manga styled concept art on his Behance profile. The series has been very well received and has recently been listed on the "featured" page (deservedly). I came across these pieces by Isaac Bidwell on behance. He's got a lot of work on his behance profile but these pieces I liked the most. They are part of a series which I recommend checking out. I really like this piece by Cristian Blanxer, which is part of a series that features female subjects in various poses, some being erotic, while others like this one are more subtle. Most of the pieces in this series verge slightly into abstract and surreal art with Cristian's great use of abstract colour and texture, which gives them an almost dreamy feel. Jovan Milovic has posted a series of truly epic tech/sc-fi illustrations. The detail and sense of energy is outstanding. I really like how the forms are quite abstract yet hint at familiar urban forms such as buildings, cities or trains. Ozan Turkkan has put together an amazing series of generative algorithmic/fractal computer art (sorry if I got that wrong). I don't know much about this fringe computer art, but I think the results are amazing. I found these beautiful shots which are part of a series on Faby Martin's behance page this morning. These two were my favourites from the series. The colour, depth and light are just outstanding. As usual I was attracted to the silhouettes contrasting against a vivid background, and I love the way the light reflects off the dust revealing the sign silhouette in the the second shot. I found these shots by Agelkos Photography on behance this morning. The bridge shot initially caught my attention. I always like it when photographers capture industrial infrastructure as a silhouette. I spotted this beautiful piece by Kasiq Jungwoo on behance today. His use of pattern and texture with line drawing help to make this a really unique piece. From what I can gather Hendrik Gericke is typically a non-digital artist. A visit to his website reveals all sorts of oil and ink goodies. It seems here though that he's merged his talents with the digital world, with amazing results! The contrast of photographic image juxtaposed with ink drawing creates a wonderfully surreal piece. A video artist on youtube by the name of TheFroschyankee has put this amazing video together for the Boards of Canada remix of Last Walk Around Mirror Lake. Matthias Heiderich has put together a series of shots that explore colour in the urban landscape of Berlin. What I really like about this series is the simplicity of the work and the sense of nostalgia it induces. Most of the shots are quite minimal, with a strong focus on colour and composition. Nawer Nawoner has combined graffiti art with architecture/3D modeling to create something quite unique and inspiring. Please note that these pieces are not digital, they are wall paintings, completed using spray paint, masking tape and stencil. This piece by Sunny Balliette, in my mind is the definition of awesomeness. It's a little dark, a little nostalgic, has some great layering and nice type work. The contrast between the back ground textures works really well – paint strokes and vector patterns. Guillaume Fournier has put together this amazing piece, which to me sits in a world constructed from architecture, video games, and 80s. The level of detail and complexity here is amazing, every time I look at this piece I notice something new.
