A nice piece of ink on paper here from Negritoo. It seems rare that I come across anything that is so back to basics these days. It's nice to see something that's a little raw, a great piece of tattoo are too! This was part of a series of similar sketches here.

MAYERAS PIERRE: THE HARD LUCK MAN

I thought I'd post this piece by Materas Pierre because I love the style of drawing the style of narrative and the content. Each frame itself is potentially it's own art piece, but together they assemble to create an interesting context. Mayeras is an excellent artist and knows his media well (much like Joe Dion in my last post). There's not much else to be said here, except kick-ass piece of art! See his folio here.

ISAAC BIDWELL: BIJIN-GA

I came across these pieces by Isaac Bidwell on behance. He's got a lot of work on his behance profile but these pieces I liked the most. They are part of a series which I recommend checking out. I think what I really like like about Isaac's style is that he is able to produce by hand what many artists fail to achieve using computers. His artwork is distinctly comic book styled but from what I could gather it's all done by hand (at least the work of his that I've seen anyway). I see a lot of artists try to replicate this style of art (sometimes, admittedly myself included) with the aide of computers and they fail – there are those that create beautiful digital artwork in this style too, but to see an artist reach these heights with his/her hands is awesome. The unique and organic appearance of hand-drawn art is nearly impossible to replicate digitally and Isaac's style and choice of subject matter project his work further into awesomeness. LOIS VAN BAARLE: FLOW

Lois Van Baarle demonstrates her beautiful illustration style in this series I came across on behance this morning. A quick trip to her website provides many more pieces of inspiration. In her bio she states that she's been drawing "since the day I could hold a pencil" but only within the last few years has she made the switch to digital art. I really like the sense of depth and the richness in colour in this series and how her characters sit nicely between comical and real-life. Check out the whole series here and Lois's website here.

DAVID MERRIQUE: RECOVERY MISSION

David Merrique has put together this awesome illustration that looks like it could be the final shot in a creepy sci-fi film. When I first looked at this piece I was aware of the overwhelming sensational of complete hopelessness. It reminded me of scenes in sci-fi films where astronauts are flung into space with no control due to some disastrous mishap, which puts them on an unstoppable trajectory away from their ship knowing that they will die alone when they eventually run out of air. Horrible stuff, or beautiful horror? It seems the chap in this piece met his fate much faster, but dying alone in the cold, dark setting of space is uncomforting enough. I really like David's style here, the use of intricate hand drawn line work gives this piece a nice organic feel, that's quite pleasant to the eye. The blood floating in zero gravity is a nice touch, the red contrasting nicely with the cold blue surroundings. Check out David's folio and website for some more great illustrations.

HENDRIK GERICKE: SEMI-PERMANENT SUBMISSION 2010

From what I can gather Hendrik Gericke is typically a non-digital artist. A visit to his website reveals all sorts of oil and ink goodies. It seems here though that he's merged his talents with the digital world, with amazing results! The contrast of photographic image juxtaposed with ink drawing creates a wonderfully surreal piece. What initially caught my attention was the wonderful sense of depth – which is present throughout the whole series. Check out the whole series here.

j3l06: SKETCHES + GRAFFITI ARTS

j3l06 has posted some superb 3D renders of graffiti styled art on his behance profile. I posted some similar work by a different artist a few weeks back. I think this style is an amazing addition to the graffiti art world, which has been mostly restricted to paint on concrete. What really impressed me about his folio is that he also has some great drawings. I love it when artists/designers don't restrict themselves to one medium. It's great to see how their particular style gets translated from one platform to the next. This is a particularly good example because j3l06's work looks amazing as both 3D models and pencil drawings. How could I not post this awesome sketch of a skull anyway. As mentioned in previous separate posts: skulls and scale grab my attention. I haven't seen a nice crop of a skull like this before. It makes me want to draw skulls like I'm at art school again. It's been a while since I've delved into my pencil case, but the longer I leave it, the greater the desire to draw again!
