ERIC PALMER: 8-BIT MOVIE POSTERS

In light of my 8-bit tees I thought I'd post these epically cool 8-bit movie posters. There is something really quite humble about 8-bit graphics and I love that they have found a place in today's art world – although hopefully not to be over done. ANDREAS LEONIDOU: WHAT IS DEATH?

Andreas Leonidou has posted an interesting series exploring the concept of death. Throughout the series there is a feeling of narrative as the skull becomes more abstracted, possibly symbolising different takes on death. As a fan of skulls in art I was instantly drawn in, but seeing the development throughout the series I found more depth and intrigue. I think Andreas has done a great job at using a single image in different ways to keep interest within the viewer. See more of Andreas's work here.

DKNG STUDIO: THE APPLESEED CAST

I came across this work by DKNG studio this morning. I think they have given the world a beautiful poster and given us a rare insight into the process involved. I love seeing how other creatives work, I think it's almost as interesting and diverse as the artwork itself. The poster itself I think is very bold/striking with a great choice of colors and great composition.

MAGNUS HENRIKSEN: The MAJESTIC MATTERHORN

I spotted this piece by Magnus Henriksen, I love his style and subject matter. Perhaps I just have a thing for mountains at the moment. Symbolism wiki states that:

"Mountains can be used to create a secluded, isolated or hard to reach place. Such a place could symbolize loneliness or difficult to achieve mental, spiritual or emotional states."

I think these themes are emphasised in this piece through the style of photography and post-photographic work. The worn away/old look gives a feeling of nostalgia or places it in a world of dark fairy tales.

HORACIO LORENTE: SHH... FESTIVAL 2008

I stumbled across these posters by Argentinian artist Horacio Lorente. There are among several concepts he did for a film festival. I think these examples are stronger than the final one. I think this would have been a really fun project to be involved in, especially with the theme revolving around the mountain, which opens up lots of visual options. I think Horacio has done really well at exploring different directions using a range artistic techniques.

STAR WARS PLANET POSTERS

Justin Van Genderen has put together a series of posters featuring destinations only Star Wars geeks would recognise (me included). His execution is spot on IMO, the vintage theme reflects the general distressed/grimey nature of the Star Wars universe, something that George Lucas nailed but didn't continue in the more recent films as much. The use of textures here really lifts the simple vectors and tidy type work which all come together in strong compositions.
