ALL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES JACK A THRALL BOY
A few months back I found myself staring at a poster of the above image and it occurred to me how vampiric Jack looks - I suppose that's half the point, anyone who is familiar with the film will agree that at this climatic point in the film Jack is at his most evil. So after applying some simple photoshop I present my Shining vampire parody t-shirt: All work and no play makes Jack a thrall boy. For anyone interested I've popped this onto a t-shirt over at redbubble (it will look like the above mock up – printed design dimensions may differ slightly).

I thought I'd share a piece of my own work, it's been a while. This is a logo I designed for Jewellery designer, Sally Rose. My goal here was to design a unique logo that was reflective of her unique work.

This is a piece I've been working on for the last six months or so. It is an abstract representation of my recent experiences abroad in Germany, but I prefer the viewer to interpret it in their own way. I also see this as a possible start of a new series that explores the contrast between symbols of power and symbols of anti-power. Hopefully more to come.

LMD WORK: EURO PHOTOGRAPHY
I thought it was about time that I posted some of my own work. This is something I'm going to try and do more often, but I've been thinking that since the beginning. This time for reals! These HDR shots were taken on a recent trip to Europe. The top shot is a sneaky little alleyway in Glasgow – after some great Indian curry, the middle shot I took in Lyon, France after to some cycle-exploring (and paying ridiculous amounts of money for the bikes due to language barriers) and the third shot is Hamburg Harbour in Germany. This was during a huge harbour festival, there was a great atmosphere. Hamburg is a wonderful city. I'm really enjoying taking HDR shots on sunset. I find the trick is to take the photo while slightly facing toward the sun. You get all sorts of crazy reflections and beams that normal photography can't handle (at least not in my incapable hands anyway). I've recently posted a few more shots on my behance profile check them out and give them an appreciation if you dig them.
LMD WORK: BAUHAUS MUSEUM BERLIN
I've just come back from a weekend in Berlin. I pretty much needed monday to recover and get me back on track. Berlin is a crazy town that seems to speed up (not slow down) as late night becomes early morning. The day I took this shot was a sight seeing day, I was in a semi-state of delirium after not much sleep from the night before. We saw some historical delights before making our way to the Bauhaus museum. When we arrived, we were presented with what can only be described as an oasis of deck chairs strategically position in the sun (is it normal to have outdoor deck chairs in the sun at museums in Germany?). After seating myself in the warm sun and sipping a beer I took this photo then fell into a wonderful sleep (or nap). Afterwards the Bauhaus museum, although short was definitely worth a look.

Here's a few more shots from my Hamburg exploration. one of things I'm enjoying most over here is just exploring. The urban landscape has so much depth. It's full of life in the darkest places. The city feels a lot more accepting of street art.
Now that I'm finally settling into a routine I'm going to start regular explorations starting in my neighbourhood, and radiating out. Spring is well and truly here, the days are getting longer the temperature more tolerable. The urban adventurer in me is hungry. As the trees begin to fill with leaves I've also been thinking a little more about diverting my photographic attention from city to nature. Perhaps in this city part of me is missing the greenery of Tasmania.
I hope you like these shots. When I have a decent enough collection I'll post a "best of" on my behance profile, and in the meantime I'll keep posting more finds here.

Here are a few snaps I've taken during my current stay in Hamburg. These were all taken on the same day during a walk from the Schanze to the city. It was a quick walk so I hope to go back again and take loads more pics.

Thanks to everyone who voted for my piece The Together Effect for the Desktop magazine covers competition. I was lucky enough to get my work featured with 3 other pieces, from 250 submissions.
LMD: URBAN PHOTO TEES
I've had these shirts sitting in my side bar for a little while now and had been meaning to write a bit about them. I've been a little busy over the last couple of days and haven't had the chance to go hunting for art so now is the perfect opportunity. I posted these on my behance profile a month or so back and got a wide range of feedback. Some people loved them others weren't into photo tees others weren't into square designs on shirts. I own a few square shaped photo tees and love them, so it didn't seem like an issue for me. I like these shirts so I decided to stick to my guns and keep them as they are. I've never been a huge fan of humourous/cute tees, like my design work tees I like tend to have a more serious and sometimes dark tone. My rationale on behance is as follows:
"In this project I've explored layering in graffiti. I've noticed, typically, graffiti has a short life span before it's painted over with a new piece. I've tried to focus on the subtle hints that previous artwork has left behind. With a thorough analysis one could even construct a time line based on where the various positions are layered. Between the layers lie many "sub-layers" of simple tags, scribbles, paint drips and random mess/grime. All of these elements create an extremely unique and temporary texture, before someone paints over and changes them once again. These are a capture of graffiti in both space and time.
Why put the images on t-shirts? The idea came to me late the other night, I did a quick mock up and thought "Hell yeah!" Enjoy."

LMD: THE BRIDGE
This is a shot I took about a year ago that's part of an HDR series of the Tasman Bridge, which links the Eastern and Western shores of Hobart,my home town in Australia. Underneath the bridge is another of my favourite places in Hobart. I always feel completely removed from my normal world when I'm there. On this particular day there were some fairly aggressive storm clouds building up and a cool breezing coming off the water, all I could hear was the faint hum of cars passing above.
LMD NEW WORK: THE DJ SHADOW REMIX PROJECT
This is my submission for the Dj Shadow Remix Project. On Shadow's website there is/was a calling for fans to submit art work for the cover of this upcoming album before March 31st (2010). I jumped at the opportunity, I've listened to Shadow for many years and the idea of creating a piece that reflects his music was very appealing. It took me a little while to nail a concept. I really had to stop myself from just diving in and creating some arbitrary mess that had no substance (but would have been fun anyway). I decided to concentrate on the idea of a remix and to try to visually define remix with a DJ Shadow flavour. I really wanted to avoid all the DJ clichés out there and in doing so started looking at old cassette tapes as a possible avenue, and the idea of a "mix tape" which was popular in DJ circles back in the day. I started collecting tapes and admiring their beautiful old designs from the 70s and 80s. I noted the feelings of nostalgia I got from tapes, probably associated with memories of my first cassette tapes. For the first 15 years of my life all the music I listened to was on cassette tapes. I've also felt nostalgia when listening to particular DJ Shadow tracks, and this was something I definitely wanted to explore in my submission. So eventually the idea of slicing, dicing and "remixing" old cassette tapes is what led to my final execution. The tapes I used are also my own design. I photographed old cassette tapes and redesigned the labels with a retro spin in illustrator and photoshop. Let's hope Shadow likes it.
