BETO JANZ: BROKEN DECKS/SKULLS

Beto Janz makes great use of discarded objects by converting old skateboard decks into gnarly skulls. This was actually part of a clever marketing campaign:

In order to promote this new spot, designer Beto Janz customized used and broken decks, using the decks to produce skulls. Stickers with the brand and the address of the new stores were applied to them and they were left on streets nearby main skateboard places around Curitiba/Brasil - Therefore, anyone who finds them, gets them. An "underground" way of promoting the store.

I would love to get my hands on one of these skulls! Beto's website is worth a look too!

PAULINE DARLEY: SHE WAITED TOO LONG

While I was living in Hamburg last year I'd go for daily walks where I'd explore the city and take photos (great fun). On one such outing I stumbled across a photoshoot with female models wearing make up similar to the photos above. It was in a quiet little street in a suburb near Altona. It was quite surprising and really made it a memorable walk – although up until seeing Pauline's photography above I'd somehow completely forgotten about it. I don't know why I didn't take a few sneaky snaps myself! Anyway, I spotted these awesome shots on behance today. I had to post them. Check out more of Pauline's photography here. And now for a slight departure from retro futurism and back to zombies and skeletons. The colours, the style, the composition, the expression on that poor bastard's face, Brandon Heart has nailed it all in this epic illustration that I would happily wear on a shirt. FRANCISCO PEREZ

I always got a bit freaked out during sci-fi films when some unfortunate soul was projected into space away from their space craft with nothing to control their trajectory, dependant on the life support offered by their space suit, usually only lasting several hours. I can't think of a more lonely way to die. Alone in the cold, black void of space – which I assume is what happened to this poor lad above (top). The second piece, I thought was just really cool. The minimal use of colour has resulted in a strong output and really unique use of lighting. Nice pieces here by Francisco Perez, check out more of goodness here.

It's a skull floating in a universe of pink gelatinous jelly goo and party drugs (or head ache pills). I love it. Grapheart has plenty more art that is plenty cool and plenty excellent. GO.

FRANCOISE NIELLY

While I was recently in Paris I spotted a painting by French artist Francoise Nielly. I was walking across the road from a gallery that was closed with the inside lights off, yet the expressive bold colour and texture was enough to catch my attention and fascinate me. There is something very fresh and energetic about her work. The unique colour palettes have been carefully chosen and when executed with her painting style are at their loudest.

I strongly recommend checking out Francoise's website, there is an enormous amount of inspiring work. It was a privilege to see just one of her pieces in person (despite being outside the gallery looking through a window) I hope to one day see an exhibition.

THOMAS KURIATKO: ILLUSTRATIONS

Thomas Kuriatko has posted a series of epic illustrations on his behance profile which I would file in the "I wish I had those sorts of skills" category. The piece above was my personal favourite. Although each illustration within the piece is awesome in its own right I'm glad that he's used them as a montage/narrative piece – as with most montages it gives the illustrations much more context and depth. I particularly like Thomas's style and colour palette, which to me seems like a nod to the grind house genre. Very tasty.
